Zalando and Hellofresh benefit from the corona crisis – many new customers

While the Corona crisis poses financial problems for many companies, some companies can benefit: for example, the fashion retailer Zalando or the supplier of Hellofresh cooking boxes.

Closed fashion stores and outlet restrictions in Europe brought Zalando new customers and a jump in profits during the Corona crisis. Adjusted operating profit reached nearly 212 million euros in the second quarter, more than double that of the previous year, as Europe’s largest online fashion retailer announced on Tuesday.

In the first quarter, reluctance to buy at the start of the crisis pushed Zalando into the red.

At the end of June, the number of customers was a fifth higher than the previous year at more than 34 million. This is the largest increase since the end of 2015. Sales increased in the second quarter by 27% to 2.03 billion euros.

Hellofresh takes advantage of customers who stay at home

Another company that can profit from the Corona crisis: the supplier of Hellofresh cooking boxes. The group is emerging as one of the biggest winners from the Corona crisis.

Between April and the end of June, Hellofresh collected around 18.1 million orders, more than twice as many as a year earlier. Sales increased 123 percent to 972 million euros.

The company is taking advantage of the fact that, due to the pandemic, many people are working in the home office, looking after their children at home, and instead of eating in the canteen, have to conjure up something hot every day on the table. The number of active customers increased from 2.41 million year on year to 4.18 million in the second quarter.

Hellofresh offers food suggestions, including ingredients, from which customers can assemble cooking boxes. At the beginning of June, Hellofresh expanded to Denmark and is now represented in 14 countries.
