The United States expressed this Monday “deeply concerned” about the development of elections in Belarus, where the opposition refused to acknowledge the victory of the country’s president, Alexandr Lukashenko, and considered that “they were neither free nor fair” .
“Severe restrictions on candidates’ access to the polls, a ban on independent local observers in polling stations, intimidation tactics used against opposition candidates and arrests of peaceful protesters and journalists have hampered the process,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement.
