Washington, August 9. (EFE) .- The President of the United States, Donald Trump, said on Sunday that it seems a good idea to add his face to the sculpted faces of four country leaders on Mount Rushmore (South Dakota).
“I never suggested this, although based on all the things accomplished during my first three and a half years, perhaps more than any president. It seems like a good idea to me! ” The president tweeted.
Trump followed his message with a link to a CNN story that echoed information that appeared this weekend in The New York Times, which indicated that a White House aide had contacted him last year. to the office of South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem, to ask what the process would be like to add the figure of a president at Rushmore.
The newspaper also recalled that Trump told Noem in 2018 at the Oval Office that he aspired to have his face included in the monument.
In a second tweet, Trump released a photo of him in Rushmore, taken during his visit last month, on the eve of July 4, where he delivered a speech instigating social divisions, amid the wave of racial protests in the country and attacks on monuments of presidents and leaders of the Confederation, among others, as symbols of the United States’ slave past.
The faces of South Dakota are carved on the faces of Presidents George Washington (1789-1797), Thomas Jefferson (1801-1809), Abraham Lincoln (1861-1865) and Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909).
For thousands of indigenous people in the United States, Trump’s visit to Mount Rushmore was a “symbol of white supremacy” promoted by the president, and they took it as an “insult” amid the national debate over monuments and racism.
