The bosses of German automakers have reduced the number of candidate cities for the future location of the IAA auto show. Berlin, Hamburg and Munich are still on the list. This is the end of the historic site of Frankfurt. Frankfurt’s Economic Affairs Department Markus Frank (CDU) told the German news agency on Wednesday that it had just received the rejection of the VDA.
The IAA 2019 is considered a failure by the public
The last edition of the past year is considered a failure among the public and the organizers. The association wishes to turn the show into a motor show a driving force behind new mobility concepts.
Cologne, Stuttgart and Hanover are also out of the race, which had also applied for the International Motor Show. The seven candidates presented their concepts in Berlin last week.
“The ideas of each city are very creative and always demanding,” said the VDA. “It’s a very close race and the performances are consistently high.”
Not an easy farewell to Frankfurt
The ideas and concepts from Frankfurt are also very impressive, said the VDA. Farewell Frankfurt was not easy for the board. “For almost 70 years the main metropolis was the city of the IAA. Internationally, this became clear from the frequently used term“ Frankfurt Motor Show. ”The association thanked the city and the exhibition company.
“We are disappointed and shocked,” said Frankfurt Economic Director Markus Frank (CDU). “This difficult day teaches that everything a city has in terms of institutions and events must be taken care of.” Besides Frank, Mayor Peter Feldmann (SPD) and Hesse Transport Minister Tarek Al-Wazir (Greens) also supported the candidacy. Feldmann had criticized the event, on which he was not allowed to speak after his presentation in September 2019.
Regularly in Frankfurt since 1951
The IAA had been held regularly at the Frankfurt trade fair since 1951 and addressed a million people with individual problems. In contrast, only 560,000 visitors came to the IAA last year. For this, there were strong protests against horse shows and the use of land by automobile traffic.
