Berlin (dpa) – CDU leader Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer strongly expects her successor as party chairman to also want to become the Union’s candidate for chancellor.
“I guess someone who can be appointed CDU president is also doing it to run for chancellor,” Kramp-Karrenbauer of the German news agency in Berlin said. “Anyone who is now applying for CDU president is also applying internally to CDU for the chancellor candidacy. It is perfectly clear. It is interrelated.”
Three prominent men are applying to succeed the AKK at the party conference in Stuttgart in early December: the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Armin Laschet, the economic politician and former leader of the Union parliamentary group Friedrich Merz and the foreign politician Norbert Röttgen. Laschet and Merz have the best opportunities. It’s different with the candidacy for chancellor. Here, Bavarian Prime Minister and CSU boss Markus Söder has a big lead in the polls. Söder has repeatedly stressed that he sees his place in Bavaria – but many trust him to have ambitions for the chancellery.
When asked if the good results of Söder’s poll were a decisive argument for the CDU to nominate him for chancellor, Kramp-Karrenbauer said: “Precisely because of the trend of media excitement, I advise you to take another look at the realities. ” There is a sequence in the determination of the candidate: “The CDU must first decide for itself who it wants to send in the race. The CDU and the CSU, the party leaders and the committees decide together whether that will be the candidate. for the Union. “
Kramp-Karrenbauer did not want to rule out the possibility that the candidacy for chancellor, unlike the favored CSU, could be clarified this year. The CSU meets a few days after the CDU for its party convention in mid-December – normally the party convention of the smaller sister party precedes that of the CDU.
In response to the question of whether the streak proposed moving to the federal election year 2021 with a co-chancellor candidate and therefore with a strong sign of unity, the party leader said: “So far , signals from Munich have been different – that the question should be asked at the beginning of the year. Wants to clarify in 2021. “She added:” This will have to be decided in light of the situation in the coming months. “
If a prominent woman were to run for the presidency, it would, from Kramp-Karrenbauer’s point of view, “certainly be an enrichment for the field of candidates”. The statutes of the CDU provide that: Until shortly before the vote, candidates could be nominated or a candidate could be. “So there is still time until December for anyone in the party to vote for a candidate.”
If the party convention cannot take place as planned due to a second wave of the corona pandemic, the board in place will remain in place, Kramp-Karrenbauer said. “I am part of the Federal Council, so this applies to me too.” Their objective, however, is “for the party to be better organized in December in terms of organization, content and personnel”.
So far, the 1001 delegate meeting has been scheduled under the conditions of the corona pandemic with restrictions on the number of people and rules of distance, Kramp-Karrenbauer said. She is in constant contact with the three presidential candidates. After the summer break, she wanted to discuss with them what the schedule would look like until the party convention – and how the candidates saw the situation. “I guess all three will support their candidacy. At least I don’t have any other signals just yet.”
At the CDU, one wonders if Laschet could still swap roles with his team partner Jens Spahn due to the rather poor results of his personal investigation – and if the Federal Minister of Health himself will take over the party presidency.
