Nuremberg sticks to the candidacy of the capital of culture

Despite the financial problems caused by the Corona crisis, Nuremberg wants to become European capital of culture in 2025. Mayor König sees the candidacy as an opportunity – other projects must await him.

The city of Nuremberg wishes to stick to the candidacy for European Capital of Culture 2025 despite the financial problems caused by the Corona crisis. “The candidacy for the European Capital of Culture is the highest priority for us, because it also helps us to come out of the crisis well,” said Mayor Marcus König (CSU) of “Bild”.

For other cultural projects, however, the head of the town hall did not want to give guarantees. “We certainly can’t renovate the opera house on our own, and neither can the new concert hall.” But he did not want to anticipate the decision of the city council.

According to the original plans, the city wanted to start construction of a 1,500-seat concert hall in early 2021; the completion was scheduled for 2024. The renovation of the opera house is then scheduled. However, the costs of large-scale cultural projects are likely to be subsidized to a large extent by the Free State.
