Masks, meetings: facing Covid, Castex announces a new twist

POLITICS – “This is all really worrying.” Jean Castex’s tone was firmer than usual. Traveling to the University Hospital of Montpellier, the Prime Minister detailed the measures taken by the Defense Council dedicated, this Tuesday, August 11, to the resurgence of the coronavirus epidemic in France.

“If we do not react collectively, we expose ourselves to a high risk of a resumption of the epidemic that will be difficult to control. It will re-energize the entire health chain. It will also put pressure on our economy, our educational system, our collective and cultural life (…) no one wants to live it again, ”warned the head of government together with his Minister of Health, Olivier Véran. as you can see in the video at the top of the article.

By pointing to “less vigilance, less discipline”, based on a series of worrying health indicators, Jean Castex has therefore detailed a new twist, when it comes to masks and meetings.

Extension of the use of the mask outdoors

First announcement: the extension, to the maximum, of the obligation to wear a mask. Wanting to react “strongly”, the Prime Minister announced that he would “ask the prefects to approach local elected officials to extend as much as possible the obligation to wear a mask in public spaces.”

Since a decree dated July 31, the prefects have effectively enjoyed this prerogative “when local circumstances require it.” Several municipalities have already taken the step in some of its streets, among them Paris and Marseille. Jean Castex now wants to go further in the face of the worsening of the epidemic.

The 5000 person caliber expanded

The head of government also announced the extension until October 30 of the ban on events of more than 5,000 people. The prefects will have the “possibility of repealing it with the verification of strict respect for sanitary instructions,” he added, recalling that “we cannot expect everything from the public authorities, each one has a part of responsibility.”

More controls

Jean Castex also called for a tightening of controls “on compliance with all the rules aimed at preventing the spread of the virus: respect for barrier gestures, the use of masks”, especially in restaurants, or the “obligations to report meetings of more than 10 people ”.

We must “above all avoid a setback, a major reconfiguration, it is essential and within our reach,” he insisted again, asking “to be lucid” and “for some, to re-enter.”

The number of people diagnosed positive for Covid-19 has increased by 785 new cases in the last 24 hours. In total, 10,800 new cases were registered in one week.
