Amal Clooney, Amal Alamuddin by her maiden name, was born in Beirut in 1978. She grew up in Lebanon before her family moved to England to escape the civil war. In fact, the explosions that hit the city particularly affected George Clooney’s wife. Especially since Amal Clooney has always been very committed. In the past, as a lawyer, she defended Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, but also the opponent and former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.
A donation of $ 100,000
In a press release released this Friday, August 7, the Clooney couple explains that they have donated $ 100,000, the equivalent of € 85,000 to associations in Lebanon to help the people of Beirut. “We are both deeply concerned about the people of Beirut and the situation they have suffered in recent days,” the couple said.
On Tuesday August 4, two explosions destroyed part of the city of Beirut in Lebanon. The explosions, felt up to Cyprus and due to the storage of ammonium nitrate, a very dangerous product. The toll is heavy. The explosions killed at least 137 people and left 5,000 wounded. Emmanuel Macron was one of the first heads of state to react. The French President also went there on Thursday, August 6 to provide the country with the logistical support of France.
This is not the first time that Amal and George Clooney have shown generosity. Earlier this year, to support the fight against the coronavirus, they had donated a million dollars.
