BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – mobile phones, medicines, panda bears: air freight is increasingly handled at Berlin Tegel and Schönefeld airports. Nearly 50,000 tonnes of cargo passed through airports last year, five percent more than the year before, according to information from the airport company. 40,000 tonnes alone were handled as additional cargo on passenger planes at Tegel airport, an increase of 6%.
One of the reasons for this growth is the increase in online commerce. Discount battles such as Black Friday and Cyber Monday in the United States have also been felt in Berlin, the airport company said. After all, one-fifth of the 90,000 tonnes of air cargo destined for the United States goes to the United States and China. The total includes goods transported by truck to airplanes at major freight airports such as Frankfurt or Leipzig. It increased by 2%.
Air freight has grown slightly faster on average than in Berlin. The capital is not a major freight location, it ranks seventh nationally. About 40 times more are handled at the largest German airport in Frankfurt.
Berlin Airmail is transported by air from Tegel, 4,000 tonnes in 2017. Courier and express services in Berlin depart mainly from Schönefeld, where 9,300 tonnes of freight were loaded, three percent more than the ‘last year. The biggest cargo last year was the panda bears Meng Meng and Jiao Qing.
