Dominican Republic opens modern prison to end overcrowding | Society | America Edition

Dominican President Danilo Medina inaugurated this Monday the La Nueva Victoria prison, a modern center with a capacity for 8,878 inmates with which it is intended to end the overcrowding and inhuman conditions that are common in the country’s old prisons.

The new prison is located in San Antonio de Guerra, about 40 kilometers from Santo Domingo and close to the old La Victoria prison, a 70-year-old prison that is “the main symbol of the defects and deficiencies” of the prison system. Dominican Republic, according to the Attorney General of the Republic, Jean Alain Rodríguez.
