Corona crisis: New start in pandemic: schools face challenges – Germany and world

Berlin – On Monday, school starts in Berlin, Brandenburg and Schleswig-Holstein after the summer holidays – but discussions on mask requirements and hygiene concepts continue.

Federal Minister of Education Anja Karliczek (CDU) demands that “nose and mouth covers should be worn at school if distance rules cannot be observed”. She said this to the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung”.

Given the corona pandemic, she sees schools facing challenges such as “maybe never” existed. “Now, of course, many would like to return to face-to-face teaching. Personal encounters are undoubtedly of particular importance for successful learning. Disadvantaged students have particularly suffered from school closures. “Because we are not doing them well enough with digital learning formats yet,” says Karliczek.

The chairman of the Bundestag’s education committee, SPD MP Ernst Dieter Rossmann, described the start of the school year in the newspaper as a “stress test for educational federalism”. He demanded from the federal states “more clarity and common ground beyond the concept of hygiene”. Different regulations in neighboring federal states could only lead to confusion if they could not be justified in a clear and transparent manner what were the special criteria and the different regional departure conditions.

Committee Vice-President Sybille Benning (CDU) told the newspaper: There will be no return to the functioning of the school as we know it at this time. The protection of health remains the top priority. Nevertheless, I firmly believe that resuming lessons while respecting the hygiene measures provided for this is of great importance in order to guarantee equal opportunities for all young people in Germany. “

Schleswig-Holstein Education Minister Karin Prien (CDU) has warned of competition between federal states over particularly strict corona rules in schools. “The states are in close coordination, and there is a regular exchange both at the technical level and between the ministers of education. But I also want to stress: I consider that the races between states for particularly strict rules are wrong . “

The boss of the left Katja Kipping wants to draw on an overview of the subject of the mask. “Teachers must radiate that it is good to wear masks. With toddlers, there is also the risk that they use masks incorrectly, an enlightening gesture is important here,” she told the newspapers from the Funke media group. According to Kipping, politicians should have used the holiday season more to prepare for the start of the school year, for example to acquire additional rooms. “No one should pretend you can just go back to normal operations.”
