Lagos – Hansi Flick sees optimal preparation possibilities for the Champions League final tournament for FC Bayern Munich in the Algarve.
“In Lisbon, we would not have had the same training conditions as here,” said the Bayern coach of the stay on the Atlantic coast. About 300 kilometers from the Portuguese capital, the record champions of Germany prepare for the quarter-finals against FC Barcelona on August 14 in the luxury resort “Cascade” in Lagos. The final training session in Lisbon only takes place the day before the start of the “Final 8 tournament”.
FC Bayern have started training in the Algarve with recently ill Jérôme Boateng and Kingsley Coman. Hansi Flick can probably plan her for the quarterfinals against FC Barcelona on Friday. In front of board members Oliver Kahn and Hasan Salihamidzic, defense chief David Alaba finished only one ongoing session. The Austrian’s use against Barca is not in danger. The still ill young scorer Joshua Zirkzee was also absent from the team’s training. Boateng was slightly injured against Chelsea, Coman had been spared against Londoners.
The predominantly used players against Chelsea were a little less loaded in the first training session, during which a cool wind provided some cooling. “We need to recharge the batteries,” Flick reported in hot Portugal. He wanted to give his players a free Monday afternoon to disconnect from football.
In the Algarve region, Flick may, by his own statements, prepare the team for the unknown finals of the first class, especially during the Corona era. The training ground is part of the hotel complex.
“This is a well-known and popular hotel, where many clubs have already organized training camps,” Flick explained. From the Bundesliga, for example, RB Leipzig were already in Lagos during the winter break. Also the eventual final opponents of the Champions League, Paris Saint-Germain, wanted to reserve the “Cascade” as a preparatory camp, as reported by Flick.
In the armored hotel complex on the cliffs above the sea, the Bavarians want to adapt to the Portuguese summer climate. At the same time, staying away from the hustle and bustle of the holidays offers good protection against the coronavirus. “We have to be very careful,” Flick said of the German news agency in a conversation before the two current corona cases with Leipzig opponent Atlético Madrid became known.
The contagion in the entourage of the Spaniards would undoubtedly have confirmed the officials of Bayern in their choice of quarter. At the Lisbon tournament, the eight participating clubs were awarded hotels by the European Football Union (UEFA).
